Further Discussion On “Universal” Symbols For Cannabis Products
My very first original blog post on Compound Interests was about the seven “universal” symbols for cannabis products in adult use markets in the United States. I was happy to find out that I’m not the only one fascinated by this wonky issue, as the article was picked up by multiple publications in the cannabis world.
First, it was shared by Marijuana Moment in the 10/31/2019 edition of their daily newsletter (which you should definitely sign up for).
Next, it was discussed on the 11/4/2019 episode of Marijuana Today, the longest-running high-quality cannabis podcast out there. The full episode is about 71 minutes long, but the segment on universal symbols begins at 52:39.
Then, I appeared as a guest on the 11/6/2019 episode of Weed Wonks, a new cannabis podcast hosted by my friends and allies Andrew Livingston & Jordan Wellington. That episode runs about 52 minutes, and added a lot to my article, since Jordan was actually one of the people who created the original “universal symbol” while working in the Colorado state government. Towards the end, we also discussed broader cannabis policy in Maine, such as the delays in implementation and emerging issues like gun rights for medical marijuana patients.
On top of all that, it was even shared by Maine Office of Marijuana Policy on their Facebook and Twitter accounts. This was incredibly cool, since the blog post was spurred by their ground-breaking decision to share a universal symbol with Massachusetts.
Between the podcast discussions and my private conversations with friends, there were a lot of fascinating questions and ideas about universal symbols for cannabis products. I plan to write a sequel post sometime soon with even more symbols: old ones that were replaced by adult use states, the bigger variety of symbols in state medical marijuana programs, and symbols used by other countries like Canada. Stay tuned!
