TV Interview: NYPD Announces Relaxation In Marijuana Enforcement

In June of 2018, the NYPD announced a slight relaxation in their enforcement of marijuana prohibition: people caught smoking in public would be issued a summons instead of being arrested. While not a revolutionary change, this is a good baby step in the right direction, and it will make a meaningful difference in the lives of the millions of people living in New York City.

In my role with 4Front Ventures, I appeared on the August 27 episode of the Mary Murphy Files to talk about this change. I was joined by two researchers, Tiesha Gregory and Kate O'Malley, who work in Dr. Carl Hart’s lab at Columbia University. We discussed everything from why gateway drug theory is wrong, to why legalization is still necessary, to the laws on driving under the influence.
